My second letter to the editor in The Idaho Statesman appeared today. It is titled "A lesson from Iran"

As we watch events unfold in Iran, we should be grateful the power of religion and the state are not one here in this country. There in Iran the power of the clergy and that of the state is one, and it is there that the people are murdered in an effort to purify the population.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. That is what has happened in Iran. Those here who oppose the separation of church and religion want this power of religion combined with the power of the state - an action that corrupts both the state and the church - as seen by the actions in Iran.

"National Religious Freedom Day commemorates the Virginia General Assembly’s adoption of Thomas Jefferson’s landmark Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom on Jan. 16, 1786. This vital document became the basis for the separation of church and state, and led to freedom of religion for all Americans as protected in the religion clause in the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment." http://www.kauaipubco.com/articles/2010/01/13/news/kauai_news/doc4b4d68d4a1f44170537563.txt

"The water-dwelling ancestors of modern-day mammals, reptiles and birds emerged onto land millions of years earlier than previously believed, researchers reported.A set of fossilized footprints show that the first tetrapods — a term applied to any four-footed animal with a spine — were treading open ground 397 million years ago, well before scientists thought they existed."
